I’m A Celeb bosses fear Anne Hegerty may walk out of the jungle after breakdown on the first day in camp

The star, 60 — who has Asperger syndrome, a form of autism — has wept and admitted she feels “overwhelmed”.

Bosses let her skip the first trial. Anne, star of ITV quiz The Chase, has been comforted by camp pals Rita Simons, Emily Atack and Fleur East.

An I’m A Celeb source said: “She was distressed after the first day and found it a bit much.

“Producers wanted to ensure she was fine, so have been checking in with her.

“They didn’t want to push her too soon and were pleased teammates rallied round her. She’s explained her autism means she struggles in some social situations and can need a timeout.

“Producers want to ensure she has space. Her wellbeing is of the utmost importance.”

They have also assured relatives and pals she is OK.

Her manager David Hahn told The Sun: “She’s in very good hands there.

“When she said she was doing the show, I asked, ‘Are you sure?’. But she wanted to inspire others with autism.

“Anne’s lovely with a great sense of humour. If she can get through the first week, she’ll go the whole way.”

After a chat with Rita on last night’s show over her condition, Anne said: “I appreciate how sympathetic and supportive they are.”

Before entering the jungle, she told how concerned TV chiefs “seem more anxious about my autism than I do”.

ITV would only say: “We keep a close eye on all our campmates.”
