How Bryce Dallas Howard's Jurassic World character was nearly a villain

It turns out that Bryce Dallas Howard’s Jurassic World character Claire Dearing was nearly written as a baddie.

Claire has had an interesting character arc over the last two movies, but the original draft for the 2015 movie by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver envisaged her a little differently as her original character, ‘Whitney’.

“I only read Rick and Amanda’s script once, so I don’t remember all the details of it,” director Colin Trevorrow told BDH Network Magazine. “The lead character was a guy called Vance, who ultimately became Owen in our story.

“The film opened with Vance jumping out of a helicopter with a pack of raptors on a military raid of a drug dealer’s compound in Colombia. It was a different approach.

“But there was a character who had one or two scenes, the manager for the corporate side of the park. I think her name was Whitney. She was an antagonist to the hero, putting up red tape.”

He continued: “I remember reading that one scene and feeling like this character had the most room to grow out of anyone I’d read so far. She wasn’t awed by dinosaurs, she saw them as widgets in a business.

“To take a character who had lost her compass like that and bring her back to the wonder and respect for these creatures felt like a real journey. We thought her love of dinosaurs would likely have driven her to this job in the first place – she just had to find it again.”

Meanwhile, one of the franchise’s original stars, Laura Dern, has teased the possibility of returning to the franchise for the third Jurassic World movie.

“It’s a good time for powerful, feminist characters to be honoured,” she said. “I loved Ellie. I feel the proudest that a feminist, sassy, take-no-prisoners energy, who was integral to the storyline in saving the day, was honoured.

“I’ve had so many kids – boys and girls – for a couple decades now, come up to me saying, ‘I became a palaeontologist because of you’. And I love that it’s boys and girls.”

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is available to pre-order on DVD and Blu-ray now.
