House of Cards appears to have finally revealed how they will deal with Kevin Spacey’s departure from the show – killing his character Frank Underwood off.
The actor was written out of the final season amid allegations of sexual misconduct against him last year, instead focusing on Robin Wright’s now-President Claire Underwood.
In a brand new promo clip from the upcoming final season, however, we are shown Claire looking coldly to camera.
“I’ll tell you this though Francis, when they bury me, it won’t be in my backyard,” she says, “and when they pay their respects, they’ll have to wait in line.”
The camera then cuts to Frank’s father’s grave, before panning out to also reveal the gravestone of Frank himself next to it.
How he died remains a mystery, though we are sure to find out in the upcoming sixth season of the Netflix drama.
Wright recently admitted that the show came “very, very close” to being axed after the Spacey allegations emerged.
“Because of the climate at that time,” she explained. “The air was thick, you know. Harvey Weinstein… People were [saying], ‘We have to shut everything down or otherwise it will look like we are glorifying and honouring this thing that’s dirty.’
“[House of Cards] is not dirty… I believed we should finish. I believed we should honour our commitment. [To] the people that loved the show, also. Why quit?”
Last week, we were also given a fresh look at season 6 of the show with first pictures of new characters played by Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear.
The pair will play siblings who inherited a big industrial firm that is a “powerful behind-the-scenes force in the American political landscape”.
House of Cards returns to Netflix on Friday, November 2.
