Claire Danes might have told us just weeks ago that the future of Homeland was “totally uncertain”, but US network Showtime has confirmed that the series will end next year.
The announcement was made at TCA 2018 earlier today (August 6) by the network’s president David Nevins, who confirmed that the political drama will reach its “natural end” in 2019.
The long-running thriller has won eight Emmys since its premiere in 2011, including two leading actress awards for its star Claire Danes.
“Alex Gansa will be bringing his show to its proper conclusion,” Nevins confirmed, before crediting the show for “the acceleration of [Showtime’s] brand” (via Deadline).
The future of Homeland has been in doubt since the beginning of 2018, when Claire Danes – who plays Carrie Mathieson – claimed that the thriller would be ending. The actress then backtracked in June, suggesting that the series could actually continue “indefinitely”.
“We’ll see. As I said, it’s the kind of show that could continue going on indefinitely because it’s a strange model. It’s an unusual model,” she said.
“It can mutate in ways a lot of shows can’t. How’s that for an answer?”
Showrunner Alex Gansa seems to have always had plans for an eighth season, however, with him confirming earlier this year that the next instalment will be set “overseas somewhere.”
“We get to play a story with larger national stakes in season seven and we’ll go back to a smaller intelligence-based season in eight. We get to pull out all the stops this year and then get to the emotional heart of things in season eight,” he said.
Homeland airs on Showtime in the US and on Channel 4 in the UK.
