JENNIFER Metcalfe has revealed she suffered a terrifying cancer scare in her twenties.
The Hollyoaks actress – who plays Mercedes McQueen in the Channel 4 soap – had a scare eight years ago when her smear test results came back as abnormal.
She later had pre-cancerous cells removed.
Jennifer told the Sunday Mirror: "It was getting on for the high end of progression but I had the cells removed.
"People think that if you feel alright there is nothing going on but I felt absolutely in my prime. I felt absolutely fine. You can’t see it and you don’t know what is happening.
"If I hadn’t gone for that smear I don’t know where that would have ended up because I felt normal, my periods were normal and I felt no pain."
Jennifer lost her beloved dad Colin to bowel cancer when she was just 15.
She added: "It’s motivating to raise money for any charity, but I lost my dad Colin at 15. He died of bowel cancer, so it’s close to my heart.
"Grieving doesn’t get any easier but coming together for a great cause does make you feel like you’re not alone and that there are other people in in this with you.
"We had a minute’s silence when I thought about my dad."
Earlier this year Jennifer was part of the Hollyoaks cast who hosted and participated in a Race for Life on the Liverpool set.
A special Race for Life TV advert featuring Jennifer will air during Monday's Channel 4 episode of Hollyoaks.
