The Handmaid’s Tale is full of unique and memorable characters. Who do fans consider as the best characters on the series (not counting June)? Read on to find out. Some of these answers may surprise some viewers of the hit Hulu show.
Emily
Dr. Emily Malek, or Ofglen (Alexis Bledel) as she is later known to those in Gilead, is another handmaid that was once trapped alongside June. She faces torture and is treated as a criminal. However, Emily doesn’t just sit back and take things lying down. She rebels and even runs over a Guardian before being subdued. She’s a clear favorite among fans.
“Emily. I love how she f**** s*** up any way she can,” a Reddit user wrote. “She’s the type who can’t see an opportunity to put a dent in Gilead go by and not take it. I honestly wonder about the things she could have accomplished if she was given the opportunities June was.”
Emily’s intelligence makes her a force to be reckoned with. “Emilyis my favourite because she is so cold hearted when it comes to these nuts,”another Reddit user agreed. “She is smart, fair and always tries to dosomething unpredictable. She so deserves her happy ending.”
Serena Joy
Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) is a Commander’s wife that goes through many changes over the course of the show. Her ruthlessness comes back to bite her in the end, but fans still enjoy her character’s complexity all the same.
“Serena. She’s complex and the most relatable, surprisingly, at least to me,” a Reddit user explained. “It’s her complexity, of being a woman, a wife, and her desire for a child. And she’s a very conflicted character, and conflicted in her mind. I think Serena is honestly one of the most ‘realistic’ and relatable characters in the show.”
Serena is a unique character unlike anyone else on theseries. “The other characters are terribly two-dimensional, but Serena Joy iscomplex,” anotherReddit user noted. “She’s battling this intense inner turmoil while tryingto ‘keep a straight face.’”
Nick
Nick (Max Minghella) has a surprising fan following. Viewersare really hoping to see more of him in the upcoming season. They also want toknow more about his mysterious backstory.
“I like Nick because I think he’s so intriguing,” a Reddit user wrote. “I want to know all the dirt he has on the Waterfords! I think Max plays him very well also. Even though he plays neutral about things when the Waterfords are around (well, Fred anyway) he has a way of emanating emotion without giving away his true feelings.”
“I love Nick,” someoneelse said. “He is probably my favorite and I love the character developmentthat is slowly occurring. His character is not out there, but neither is hisrole. He is a silent/quiet (and safe) fighter. He balances out June’s oftendangerous attitude. Maybe he plays it too safe? I’d like to see him end up withJune – but that is another question.”
These are just a few of the best characters according tofans. The Handmaid’s Tale will be back with an upcoming season 4.
