Eurovision 2019 Madonna: Why is Madonna wearing an eyepatch?

It’s the Eurovision Grand Final this evening and all 26 countries have performed in Tel Aviv, Israel. As always Eurovision has given us theatrics, epic ballads and punchy pop songs. For tonight’s final, there was a special guest as Madonna took to the stage.

Why was Madonna wearing an eyepatch?

Madonna is no stranger to wearing unique costumes, but fans are wondering why she chose to wear an eyepatch as she sang tonight.

The singer performed two songs, one being her iconic hit Just Like A Prayer and the other her new single, Future.

This isn’t the first time Madonna performed with her eye covered, as she took to the stage for the Billboard Music Awards earlier this month wearing the bejewelled eye accessory.

This seems to be part of her new persona Madame X, with the eyepatch emblazoned with a letter ‘X’.

Her new album which will be released on June 14 is titled Madame X and is Madonna’s fourteenth studio album.

The world-famous singer also wears an eyepatch in her new video, Medellin and again during interviews to promote her song,

She spoke to fans explaining: “I feel like when I started my career as an artist, I was naive.

“I wanted to be able to go back to that time in my life when I was just starting out in New York and I didn’t care what people thought.”

Fans were quick to comment on Madonna’s performance, taking to social media.

One said: “Hello? Yes, I’d like to vote for #Madonna to win #Eurovision. Thanks. Bye.”

Another was more critical and wrote: “All the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order.”

Whilst a third defended the singer, posting: “#Madonna may have sounded flat but she won my heart tonight – being an artist is not always about having a perfect voice, but having something inspiring to say, and knowing how to deliver the message.

“She did outperform everyone else and she was #ArealQueen. #MadonnaEurovision.”

Madonna’s performance was the third time she had sung in Israel, but the first time ever she had performed at Eurovision.

Tonight was the 64th iteration of the Eurovision Song Contest, and current favourites to win are the Netherlands at 8/11.
