Emmerdale will air another experimental episode next week as Chas Dingle and Paddy Kirk say a heartbreaking farewell to their newborn daughter Grace.
The couple have been told that their little girl will only have a short time to live after being born, as she’s been diagnosed with bilateral renal agenesis and has no chance of long-term survival.
After Chas gives birth, she and Paddy (Dominic Brunt) try to make the most of every second with Grace, but they know their joy will be cruelly brief.
As they reflect on everything that Grace will miss out on in her life, Paddy starts to imagine a trip away with their daughter. Emmerdale fans will then see these imaginary scenes, adding an emotional and heart-rending new dimension to the episode.
Speaking to Digital Spy on set at Emmerdale recently, Lucy Pargeter – who plays Chas – commented: “The episode is like a fantasy flash forward. So it’s Grace when she has just been born, then at 1, at 4 and then 12.
“It’s the kind of things they would have done with her if she’d have still been around – it’s in their heads in the delivery room after she’s just been born. They’re thinking about all of the things that they won’t get to do with her. They kind of go there with her in their minds.
“It was traumatic, but it was beautiful filming it. When you are pregnant, you do think about all of the things you are going to do with your child, so it’s nice in a way to have been able to see some of that – and the kids were absolutely gorgeous.”
She continued: “It was nice, because when you have a tragic birth coming up, everything is so down. So it was good to think we wouldn’t have to spend two weeks in a hospital crying, going through the labour and birth and having absolutely harrowing times.
“The episode needs the lightness. We have had a massive build-up of how awful it is going to be, so to have that lightness is a relief. It’s bittersweet to the audience and characters.”
Back in the hospital ward, baby Grace passes away in Chas’s arms after viewers have seen the fantasy scenes.
Chas and Paddy are left distraught, knowing their lives will never be the same again. Can they pull together to support each other during this tragic time?
Emmerdale airs these scenes on Monday, October 1 at 7pm on ITV.
