Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) is very good at causing trouble in EastEnders.
Arriving last year, Ravi’s first major storyline involved him murdering Ranveer, but letting Suki (Balvinder Sopal) believe she committed the crime instead.
We were initially led to believe that Ranveer was Ravi’s father, however, as Nish (Navin Chowdhry) headed to Walford after a long stint in prison, it was revealed he’s actually Ravi’s dad, making him a Panesar.
In recent weeks, Ravi turned his attention to Denise (Diane Parish), who felt she was being neglected by Jack (Scott Maslen), who had been extremely busy with his job and dealing with his teenage children’s complicated lives.
This led Denise to fall for Ravi’s charm, which very nearly led to a steamy and lengthy affair, but when they were in a hotel room after Denise had another argument with Jack, she quickly realised sleeping with Ravi wasn’t what she wanted, and she headed home instead.
When someone gets on the wrong side of Ravi – they know about it and in order to get revenge on Denise, Ravi has turned his attention to her daughter, Chelsea (Zaraah Abrahams).
While Aaron Thiara has told us that his character is ‘still driven by his motive and his plans’, he explains that Chelsea is able to challenge Ravi, curious to know more about him.
‘There is a big turning point when Chelsea insists that she wants to know the real Ravi. It really throws him that she wants to know the deeper Ravi, and not just the surface level Ravi. He’s never had that from a woman before’, he said.
‘Because of this, Ravi feels comfortable to open up a little bit more and talk about his son and where he’s gone wrong in the past and how important Nugget is to him. Chelsea shares the same experiences, and they start to bond and connect. At this point his plans start to go out of the window and we see him in a turmoil of love, connection, motive and plan.’
In upcoming episodes, Ravi discovers that Nugget (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury), has taken Chelsea’s young son, Jordan, to a house party.
‘He can’t believe his son has behaved in this way’, Aaron told us, revealing Ravi’s initial reaction.
‘He also can’t believe that all of those connections that he’s just built up with Chelsea have been undone because she trusted Ravi when he said that Nugget was a good kid and would be able to look after Jordan. In that moment he loses control of all of the elements and within that he loses control of himself through the argument he has with his son.’
The different relationship dynamics then focuses on Ravi and Nish and, according to Aaron, he thinks his character is ‘at a point where he is done with his dad’.
‘I think it’s interesting that he doesn’t call him dad, and that he calls him Nish’, he explained.
‘He wants to prove that he is a much better man than Nish thinks he is. He’s trying to prove that he doesn’t need his acceptance or his love and that he doesn’t need anything from him. Within that Ravi is still very cut-up and bitter towards his dad.’
As if the stress involving Nugget, Chelsea, Nish and Denise wasn’t enough, Ravi’s week goes from bad to worse when he is then arrested by Callum (Tony Clay), and it’s in this moment where Ravi starts to realise just how much things could change if he’s sent back to prison.
‘He feels like his whole world is turning upside down’, Aaron said.
‘He fears he’s going to lose his son, and if he loses his son then he would feel like he’s lost everything in life. Whatever situation Ravi gets into, he always tries to find a way out, but he can’t see one at this point.
‘He is convinced that he’s going to prison as he can’t see a way out of it unless someone helps him.’
