Jodie Whittaker's first series as the Time Lord was divisive to say the least, after many die-hard Doctor Who fans took umbrage to the fact the new Doctor was a woman.
The show was also criticised by some for not being as "light-hearted" in comparison with previous efforts, in terms of social topics the show covered.
However, Arthur Darvill, who played Rory Williams in the franchise, is confident's Jodie's reprisal of the role next year will be received far better.
Speaking to What'sOnTV, Arthur said: "I think Jodie is amazing, I'm really looking forward to what they do next year.

"I always think the second series of anyone in that role is the one where they bloom.
"You've had the year of 'Will they like it? Won’t they like it?' and then the second year is great.
"We saw that with David [Tennant], Matt [Smith] and Peter [Capaldi], the second series is the one where they have fun."
Arthur starred alongside Matt Smith and Karen Gillan on Doctor Who.
He worked with Jodie on hugely popular crime drama, Broadchurch.
Despite the new series of Doctor Who being slated to return next year, it has been reported that their will be a one-off episode over the festive period this year.
Jodie is set to battle some monstrous villains in the 12th series of Doctor Who.
The BBC teased on their Twitter page that Jodie would be going head-to-head with The Judoon.
The rhino-headed, brutish intergalactic police as one of the Doctor's adversaries "on a deadly mission".
The Judoon first appeared on screen around 12 years ago, with David Tennant and his co-star Martha Jones.
Donning black, bulky armour with heavy boots, The Judoon are the show’s military police force who are highly logical in their battle tactics, but according to the show, "not very intelligent".
The Judoon have not been on screen for several years, but no doubt their arrival back on the small screen will cause a stir with the time-travelling doctor.
