Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall has opened up about the show’s new writing team, highlighting the importance of having “diversity”.
Despite the BBC show’s ethos of diversity and embracing difference, it hasn’t exactly lived up to that mantra in who they’ve hired as writers in the past.
However, that is set to change as Chibnall has brought on Doctor Who‘s first writers of colour as he takes over for season 11, and he’s explained the importance of the different perspectives that they bring to the show.
“Diversity is important because of the character mix that we have, the stories I wanted to tell and clearly the different perspectives that a diverse writing team brings,” he told Broadcast. “I want this to feel like there are no barriers to entry.”
He stressed that he wanted to get “as many women as we could get” on the team, and also spoke about the process of crafting the new series and how it relates to his previous work on Law and Order: UK.
“It’s not a writers’ room in the same way as the US, but it is about finding a way of making this a fluid, bespoke process that isn’t simply going away, writing an outline and then coming back,” he added.
“With Law and Order: UK we started at the beginning with a group of writers, all together in a room, figuring out our stories. Doctor Who was the same, being collaborative and collegiate is the easiest way of communicating what you are trying to do.”
Speaking to Digital Spy over the summer, Chibnall revealed: “We have the first writers of colour to write on Doctor Who this year – and we have two female writers and three male writers in the guest writers’ slots.”
Well, we guess it’s better late than never.
Doctor Who‘s new series begins with ‘The Woman Who Fell to Earth’ on Sunday, October 7 on BBC One.
