Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s fashion choices have had an impressive impact on both the fashion industry and the economy. And while it’s not uncommon for the Duchess of Cambridge and Duchess of Sussex to rock Dolce & Gabbana, J. Crew, Aritzia, Aquazurra, Zara, and other popular designers and brands, the royal women also throw in some lesser-known companies.

The Duchess of Cambridge and Duchess of Sussex’s wardrobes are a mix of high and affordable fashion. And, some of their favorite affordable brands aren’t that far off from many of us commoners (think: Zara, Aritzia, and H&M). While their wardrobe relatability is notable, we can’t help but wonder about the lesser-known brands highlighted in some of their fashion choices.

It’s no secret that Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle’s outfits get a significant amount of attention. According to Love the Sales, Meghan Markle’s maternity wardrobe alone has caused an influx of fashion searches over the last eight months with some brands — including those lesser-known companies — seeing search volume increase by over 5,000%. In fact, one smaller designer, Karen Gee saw overnight searches grow by 5,800% and a website crash after the Duchess of Sussex wore a white shift dress by the designer.
The royal women often wear British brands and designers — which helps boost the British economy — but also wear more local brands when visiting countries outside of the United Kingdom. Meghan Markle also wears a lot of Canadian brands, which might have something to do with her best friend and unofficial stylist, Jessica Mulroney. The Canadian stylist and fashion consultant has drawn attention to designers like House of Nonie through the Duchess of Sussex’s wardrobe.

Both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle have what fashion experts refer to as “the Kate Effect” and “the Meghan effect,” which means that both women have a tremendous amount of buyer influence and are like walking billboards for designers and brands.
Do Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle wear under-the-radar brands and designers on purpose?
It’s unclear whether their interest in lesser-known brands and designers is on purpose. However, some might argue that their support of many British brands and designers (both under-the-radar and well-known) and Meghan Markle’s love for Canadian fashion companies might be on purpose.

Regardless of popularity, wearing a British designer or brand helps boost the British economy significantly. According to StyleCaster, Meghan Markle’s influence on consumers was forecasted at over $212 million between her engagement and the royal wedding alone.
Kate Middleton also has an impressive influence over the British economy with the designers she chooses. According to Business Insider, the Duchess of Cambridge’s outfits allegedly brought in $205 million to the economy in 2015.
While they might not choose lesser-known brands and designers on purpose, the royal women know that the companies they garments to wear to royal engagements can make their country’s economy a lot of money.
