Deadpool 3: release date, cast, plot and everything you need to know

Warning: Contains spoilers for Deadpool 2.

Following the success of Deadpool 2 at the box office, fans and studio executives alike are wondering what might be next for the Merc with a Mouth. Despite his popularity, another solo venture didn’t look certain at one point, although star Ryan Reynolds has since confirmed that Deadpool 3 will now happen after all.

But where will Wade Wilson go from here? And how will X-Force fit into all this? Even Blind Al can see that the future of the franchise looks promising, so join us here at Digital Spy as we keep you updated on everything you need to know about Deadpool 3.

Deadpool 3 release date: When can we see it?

Although no official release date has been provided yet, Reynolds previously explained that working on these movies can be a slow process, so we might be waiting a while for Deadpool 3. Given that the Merc with a Mouth is also set to star in the upcoming X-Force movie, Fox needs to work out whether Deadpool 3 will take place before or after the mutant team-up before moving ahead with his solo venture.

Deadpool 3 cast: Who’s in it?

If there’s one certainty in life, it’s that Ryan Reynolds will reprise the role of Wade Wilson for Deadpool 3. Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, the Hollywood star gushed over the part, explaining that “It’s the role I feel most privileged to have in my entire career. I feel like I was sort of born for it. I love Deadpool. It’s the miracle of the mask.”

Although no-one else has confirmed their involvement yet, the cast for Deadpool 3 will be packed tighter than a chimichanga if the rumours are to be believed. During the aforementioned interview with Lorraine, Reynolds also hinted that Hugh Jackman could reprise the role of Wolverine in Deadpool 3, despite the fact that he retired the claws in Logan last year.

Deadpool 2 introduced us to a range of new heroes too and although some didn’t survive long enough to appear in a post-credits scene, characters like Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz) are all but guaranteed to join Wade in a future instalment.

Fellow teammates Colossus (Stefan Kapičić), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Yukio (Shioli Kutsana) and Russell (Julian Dennison) will probably round out the X-Force team, perhaps with Peter (Rob Delaney) in tow. Fans shouldn’t hold out much hope to see the likes of Shatterstar (Lewis Tan) and Zeitgeist (Bill Skarsgård) return for Deadpool 3, but superheroes always cheat death in the comics, so never say never.

One character who already cheated death in the franchise is Vanessa, Deadpool’s girlfriend, and it’s safe to assume that she’ll return for the sequel too. The Merc with a Mouth might have his hands full fighting to protect her though as previous Easter eggs have hinted that Mr Sinister could turn out to be the big bad of Deadpool 3. Failing that, cameos from the likes of Omega Red during the Ice Box Prison scene could also hint at the future of the franchise.

Deadpool 3 plot: Breaking the fourth wall again and again

Before Deadpool 3 was officially confirmed, Reynolds expressed some doubts to Entertainment Weekly about where the franchise could go next, saying: “I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don’t think that you can keep doing that.”

While the plan was always to see Deadpool slice and dice his enemies in future X-Force movies, Reynolds explained that a solo sequel would need to “break all kinds of weird barriers, and do stuff that no-one else can do”.

Does this mean that time travel will play a more prominent role in Deadpool 3? The last time we saw Negasonic Teenage Warhead, she was fixing Cable’s time machine so Deadpool could right the wrongs of the past, including a regrettable yet hilarious career choice made by Ryan Reynolds. We wouldn’t be surprised if Deadpool 3 ventures further into Cable’s story, introducing his daughter, Hope, whose comic book counterpart plays a pivotal role in the future of mutantkind.

Deadpool 3 trailer: When will we see it?

Production hasn’t started yet, so a trailer won’t be available for some time, but it’s likely that Reynolds will keep fans busy with hilarious promotional videos like this one where Deadpool crashed Hugh Jackman’s birthday message.

In the meanwhile, here’s the trailer for Deadpool 2 to keep you busy.

Deadpool 3 rating: Merc with a potty Mouth

The first two Deadpool movies proved that R-rated fare can also be successful at the box office. Given that adult themes are integral to Wade’s character, it’s safe to assume that Deadpool 3 will be certified as an 18 in the UK too, even if the Fox/Disney merger does go forward.

Disney executive Bob Iger promised that any plans to integrate Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe would keep his usual R-rating intact, although this might limit crossover potential with more family-friendly heroes like the Avengers.
