Batman fans anxious to see what Joaquin Phoenix will look like in full make-up as The Joker won’t have to wait any longer because the first teaser for the movie is here. So, put a smile on that face!
Even though filming has only just started on the standalone origin story for the Clown Prince of Crime, director Todd Phillips has released a camera test that sees Phoenix transform from a failed stand-up comic into the sadistic Joker.
Set appropriately to The Guess Who song ‘Laughing’, the 30-second teaser is a haunting first look at what has been described as a gritty crime thriller set in 1980s Gotham City.
The fully made-up Arthur is certainly more low-fi than any big-screen Joker that fans have seen before, looking more like a low-rent party clown than a crime boss ready to hold Gotham’s elite ransom.
Even a psychotic criminal mastermind has to start somewhere, right? Plus, Phoenix has been very open about not caring about what hardcore DC fans think about his depiction of the classic villain.
“My approach to every movie is the same,” he recently said. “What I’m interested in is the filmmaker and the idea of the character.”
Earlier this week, Warner Bros confirmed that Lost and Narcos star Brett Cullen would be replacing Alec Baldwin in Joker as Thomas Wayne, the billionaire father of Bruce Wayne.
This skewed version of Thomas Wayne will be more ruthless than previous screen incarnations, with director Todd Phillip reportedly depicting him as a cutthroat mogul rather than a sympathetic philanthropist.
The film is also set to feature the legendary Robert De Niro, American Horror Story‘s Frances Conroy and Deadpool 2‘s Zazie Beetz.
Joker has a release date of October 4, 2019 in the US.
