We wonder if Prince Charles would ask if he likes his martinis shaken, not stirred. We ask because there’s a chance the man in line to be the King of England could also be in the next James Bond movie.
Filming is underway on Bond 25, which is expected to be Daniel Craig’s final turn as James Bond. Here’s just one reason why the idea of the prince being in a movie is not as far-fetched as it sounds: His sons almost appeared in films. And his mom worked with Craig before.
How Prince Charles might be in ‘Bond 25’
Page Six reports that Prince Charles has been asked to make a “special starring role,” which is probably a cameo, in the movie on the strength of Queen Elizabeth’s appearance with Craig at the 2012 London Olympics.
“They loved the buzz around the Queen’s appearance alongside Daniel Craig and think Charles could top even that,” a source told The Sun, a UK paper. “He is the epitome of everything British, perfect for a cameo role and Bond fans worldwide would absolutely love it.”
Topping the Olympics shunt would be an impressive achievement since the Queen’s appearance made it look like Her Majesty and Bond parachuted into the stadium. The prince hasn’t accepted the offer yet, but according to The Sun’s source, he is considering it. Such an appearance might help counter the wave of bad publicity the movie faced after repeated accidents, including an injury to Craig and an explosion that went awry, damaged property and injured a crew member.
If Bond could get the queen, why not Prince Charles?
If The Sun’s report is accurate, the producers probably figure that if they could get the Queen for the Olympics, getting Prince Charles for the new movie might be comparatively easy. The Bond production company does have a relationship with the royals; with Prince Charles and Princess Diana visiting the set of the 1987 film The Living Daylights, where Princess Diana playfully smashed a prop glass over Prince Charles’ head. And the royals have appeared at several Bond premieres.
However, the queen’s appearance surprised and delighted just about everyone. In a video directed by acclaimed filmmaker Danny Boyle, Bond heads to Buckingham Palace and greets Queen Elizabeth, who says: “Good evening, Mr. Bond.” The secret agent takes her to a helicopter, out of which he and the queen appeared to skydive into the stadium.
Of course, the jumper wasn’t really the queen. It was a stuntman named, funnily enough, Gary Connery — no relation to the original Bond, Sean Connery. In the official video, the crowd at the stadium can be heard roaring with approval at the queen’s very brief acting role.
A Buckingham Palace spokesman said the Queen was “very happy” to take part and was “delighted to be asked to be involved in something so exceptional.”
Maybe Prince William and Prince Harry will try movies again?
If Prince Charles ends up declining, Princes William and Prince Harry might be possible. They almost made it into Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, but their appearance as stormtroopers were cut, supposedly because they were too tall.
Cue the scene in the original 1977 film of Princess Leia suspiciously eyeing the stormtrooper who just charged in her prison cell. The trooper looks at her quizzically, and she says: “Aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper?” This was the moment Leia first met Luke Skywalker, who eloquently responds: “Huh? Oh, the uniform.”
It remains to be seen whether any of the royals will take part in the filming, or if they’ll content themselves with showing up at the premiere. The movie was to be directed by Boyle, but he dropped out over creative differences and was replaced by Cary Fukunaga. The cast includes Rami Malek as the villain and reunites some of the actors who were in the most recent Bond film Spectre, including Lea Seydoux and Christoph Waltz. It is scheduled for release next April.
