Coronation Street had a classic mix of romance, comedy and drama this week, as Chesney Brown found himself with a surprising new girlfriend and Jude Appleton finally faced the consequences of telling a different lie every week.
But which plots were must-see and which ones didn’t quite hit the mark? Here, we’re rounding up the highlights and lowlights with some more of our hits and misses.
HIT! Emma and Chesney’s fake romance
Right now, Chesney has an Emma on his hands when he really wants a Gemma. Emma used to be head over heels for Seb, but has mysteriously lost interest. (Maybe it’s the new beard.) Gemma has a new boyfriend called Spike who’s seemingly arrived from nowhere, but she really wants Ches. We’re just about keeping up, but we still loved the classic character-based comedy on the cobbles this week.
The awkward chemistry between Emma and Chesney was particularly enjoyable, as she pretended to be his girlfriend and even helpfully gave him tips to prepare for the lady of his dreams in the future. We have a feeling Corrie will want us to root for Gemma and Chesney in the long-run, but rising star Alexandra Mardell is such a delight to watch as Emma that we’re firmly in her corner right now and hoping she gets the guy. Even if the guy in question is Chesney of all people…
MISS! Jude leaves in disgrace
Well, that escalated quickly. Jude’s “marine biologist” malarkey was played for laughs earlier in the year, but things were deadly serious this week as his latest lies caught up with him and he turned semi-violent with his mum Mary. It’s a good job he left the Street when he did, as he was probably only one hapless step away from becoming the next John Stape. (Remember how he “just wanted to teach” and left a trail of bodies in his wake?)
Angie’s confident pronouncements that Jude would never be coming back and Roy advising closing this “regrettable chapter” felt like a sign that his story was being hastily wrapped up, but in actual fact, the show has confirmed that it’s not the last we’ve seen of Jude.
How they’re going to pull his character back from so much silliness is anyone’s guess – maybe he’ll become inspired to be a tram driver next after his hasty exit via Weatherfield North?
HIT! Nick fights back
After two weeks of guilt trips and characters queuing up to complain about Nick daring to leave the cobbled streets of Weatherfield, it was refreshing to see him fighting back with some home truths of his own. Fans have sometimes complained that Shona being the mother of Kylie’s killer gets forgotten, so it was down to Nick to point out that her relationship with David is probably doomed in the long-run. Fair point.
All is finally forgiven among the Platts after David confided in Nick about his rape ordeal, but we have a feeling that Shona’s animosity with her boyfriend’s brother could be a longer-term plot. If Nick isn’t busy having his 87th fight with Peter, that is.
MISS! Audrey the crank
Audrey – one of our favourite characters – has been a total grump way too often recently. She couldn’t forgive Maria for wanting to start her own salon, she couldn’t forgive Ken for unknowingly writing about salacious tales from her past, and she even barked at poor old Roy for wittering on too much in the salon chair.
Come on, Aud – if you can forgive Lewis Archer for conning your family three times, surely it’s time to cut the rest of your friends and neighbours a little more slack? As Audrey herself would say: “Ohh, honestly!”
HIT! Holiday club
While Brian Packham hosting a holiday club for the kids didn’t seem like the most thrilling storyline on paper, it’s made it into our hits list for two very good reasons. First up, young actor Kyran Bowes is doing a fantastic job delivering Jack Webster’s ongoing storyline as he tries to get his life back on track after having his leg amputated.
We’ve also got our eye on Brian’s new boss Phil, who at best is a slippery character and at worst has the potential to be a nasty bully. Could the Street’s next villain have arrived?
MISS! Tracy’s revenge
Tracy Barlow leaving her cheating hubby Steve stranded in the Sahara desert and stealing his passport could have been the funniest scene of the decade, yet we only got to hear about it. Gutted.
Next time we demand that Corrie blows the location budget by flying the cast and crew out to Morocco, all to film that one scene. Or better yet, a Steve In The Sahara spinoff DVD in time for Christmas.
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
