Over the next few months, the former landlord’s life will be turned upside down following the factory collapse and the shocking boat fire which almost kills him and his teenage lad.
As fans know, Peter and Carla are growing close again and have been rekindling their romance.
But that happiness won’t last for long, according to the soap’s boss Iain McLeod.
Speaking to The Sun Online, Iain said: “Peter will have a big test of loyalty and will be torn between his loyalty to his son and his love for Carla.
“Basically they make a very mature decision on New Year’s Eve that maybe their relationship will forever be doomed to fail.
“They try and make it work just as friends.”
However, when the factory collapses and Carla is blamed her life begins to spiral out of control.
It’s this event which Iain says ends with Peter being forced to make a heartbreaking decision.
Iain added: “Carla reaches her lowest ever ebb and it falls to Peter to pick between his son or if he sticks around and helps Carla.
“It will put him massively at odds with his family.”
Iain said the scenes coming in the New Year were “heartbreaking” and revealed one major character will lose their life in the shock incident.
Speaking to The Sun Online, Iain also revealed how Kate Connor and Rana Nazir would reunite in a romantic New Year’s storyline.
And he confirmed Clayton Gibbs would be “rearing his ugly head” to cause chaos between his mum Shona Ramsey and David Platt.
Coronation Street continues on Wednesday night at 7:30pm on ITV.
