Coronation Street’s Bill Roache breaks silence on Ken Barlow cough ‘death’

Coronation Street icon Bill Roache appeared on ITV talk show Lorraine today to talk to host Lorraine Kelly about his 60 years on the soap.

Recently, Corrie fans were left concerned when Bill's character Ken Barlow was seen with a nasty cough, fearing that he could soon be killed off.

However Bill has now explained what that cough was all about and put fans' minds at ease by saying he's going nowhere on the soap.

Laughing about the coughing scene in question, he told Lorraine: "Someone rang me up to say, 'I gather you're dead!'"

He went on to explain the cough was just an added detail.

The 87-year-old explained: "No, what happened was, Ken was out looking for Daniel on the hill. Peter had to say, 'Your father's been out there looking for you.' It was just to show I'd caught a bit of a cold.

"Just before one scene, the director sent a note down. 'Bill, will you just cough in this scene?' 'Yes, ok.' That's it, there's no follow up story."

Lorraine was particularly relieved but quizzed Bill further on any retirement plans.

Reassuring her he had no plans to leave the soap, he said: "While I can do it – and while they want me – I will be there."

Recently, Ken has been more of a supporting character in the lives of his family, in particular grieving Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard).

Daniel recently lost wife Sinead Tinker (Katie McGlynn) to cancer and the death has hit him hard.

Ken and the rest of the Barlows have been there supporting Daniel, but it's not been easy for any of them, with Ken even breaking down at one point too.

Lorraine airs weekdays at 8.30am on ITV
