Coronation Street: Daisy and Ryan have heart-to-heart in hospital
Eccentric but lovable cafe owner Roy Cropper (played by David Neilson) is among the most popular Coronation Street characters in the UK’s longest-running soap. The ITV staple wouldn’t be the same without the socially inept but harmless stalwart, however, viewers were left believing he could soon be killed off following Monday’s episode. After leaving an event because he felt ill, Roy appeared to be breathless and worried. Could this be the start of a fatal illness for the character?
Roy has recently taken on a dog, Freddie, and has been enjoying the companionship.
Despite the wholesome story though, it seems Roy has a darker plot line coming up.
On Monday’s episode of the soap, Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman) was accompanied by Roy for some dance lessons.
However, Roy left early and was behaving somewhat strangely. As he danced with Evelyn, Roy appeared very uncomfortable and distracted.
He seemed to be in a bit of pain as he explained: “I don’t think salsa’s for me.”
When Evelyn suggested they try a waltz instead, a breathless Roy admitted he felt “unwell”.
He soon announced he had to leave and rushed out – could he be suffering from a serious illness?
Collecting Freddie from Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall), Roy avoided conversation and stated he must “hurry”.
Evelyn later went to speak to Roy and explained to him she understood his reasons for abandoning her, as she assumed Roy was reminded of his late wife Hayley Cropper (Julie Hesmondhalgh) and felt emotional about her memory.
“No,” he replied. “I did think of Hayley while we were dancing, but that isn’t why I left”.
After repeating that he felt unwell, fans were left very worried for the character.
Many took to social media to plead with the ITV soap not to kill off beloved Roy from the cobbles.
Twitter user Andrew Bewick wrote: “You’re not taking Roy away from me !! #coronationstreet.”
@JoLeonard___x added: “What’s wrong with Roy? #coronationstreet.”

Evie Punders penned: “If Roy dies I will PROTEST! Who will take the dog… who will take THE CAFE!”
@ConversationStr echoed these views, stating: “Don’t want to scare anyone but I think Freddie the dog might be cursed. How many owners has he killed before…? #corrie #coronationstreet.”
@soaps_extra posted: “Another storyline I’m enjoying is the Roy and Evelyn and Freddie storyline I feel it’ll be something to do with Angina or a heart condition for Roy.”
Could have accurately predicted Roy’s exit? Having been a favourite since 1995, he would be extremely missed.
Coronation Street continues on Wednesday at 8pm on ITV.
