Celebrity Big Brother 2018 got off to a rather awkward and inappropriate start tonight (August 17) as Roxanne Pallett described Hardeep Singh Kohli’s turban as a “hat”.
In the opening minutes of this series’ first highlights episode, we were shown moments from last night’s launch of the show, with the contestants introducing themselves to one another.
While the majority of them were able to exchange pleasantries without a hitch, Roxanne, seemingly uncertain of how to greet Hardeep, said: “I love your hat.”
Hardeep did, of course, tell her that it’s actually called a turban.
One dumbfounded viewer tweeted: “I’m just slightly disappointed that Roxanne has never met a Sikh before. ‘I like your hat’. OMG!”
Another wrote: “Some ‘celebrity’ just told a Sikh ‘celebrity’ she liked his hat- referring to his turban – my god.”
All of the contestants in this year’s Celebrity Big Brother have been involved in some form of press scandal.
Hardeep, a TV and radio presenter who has appeared on shows such as Celebrity MasterChef and Question Time, faced media controversy when he was suspended for six months by The One Show over complaints about his behaviour.
Emmerdale star Roxanne, meanwhile, made headlines when she was involved in a horrific stock car crash.
Also in tonight’s episode, Natalie Nunn shockingly asked Chloe Ayling if her kidnappers were “cute”, and Rodrigo Alves was given a final warning after twice using the N-word in conversation.
Celebrity Big Brother continues on Saturday night (August 18) at the later time of 10pm for highlights of the first full day of house action.
