Cathy Schulman & Jeff Gaspin Developing TV Series Adaptation Of ‘Mr. Nice Guy’ Novel With ‘FOTB’s Laura McCreary

EXCLUSIVE: Oscar winning producer Cathy Schulman (Crash) and former NBCUniversal TV Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin and his Gaspin Media have acquired the rights to Jennifer Miller and Jason Feifer’s just-published novel Mr. Nice Guy, to develop for television.

Fresh Off The Boat co-executive producer Laura McCreary will pen the TV adaptation for the half-hour dramedy series. Schulman will produce via her Welle Entertainment with Gaspin and Tony Sabistina through Gaspin Media. Schulman and Gaspin are preparing to take the project to potential buyers immediately.

Real-life husband and wife authors Miller and Feifer served as inspiration for the dramedy. It centers on Carmen and Lucas, a pair of magazine writers who unknowingly work for the same publication when they have a one-night stand. Their subsequent individual reviews of the encounter go viral, so they decide to continue the relationship and write weekly dueling columns reviewing each other’s performance in bed.

Mr. Nice Guy was published by Griffin Publishers on October 16.

McCreary previously served as co-executive producer on Don’t Trust The B—-in Apt. 23 and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, among other credits. She’s repped by WME.

Gaspin recently served as President of Primary Wave Entertainment, focusing on original content and working closely with Schulman’s Welle Entertainment, a co-venture with Primary Wave.

Schulman’s previous feature credits include Crash, for which she won an Academy Award, as well as The Illusionist and Bad Moms. Earlier this year, Welle Entertainment nabbed Alpha Girls, the anticipated book about the most successful women in venture capital by best-selling author Julian Guthrie. Schulman is also producing The Woman King at Tri-Star, along with Viola Davis, who stars with Lupita N’yongo, as well as Maria Bello and Julius Tennon.

Gaspin spent almost two decades at NBCU, exiting as chairman of NBC Universal TV Entertainment after the Comcast merger in 2011. He is an executive producer on LA’S Finest, the Spectrum series starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, Netflix’s hip-hop-themed music competition series Rhythm & Flow, and To Tell The Truth for ABC. Gaspin and Gaspin Media, whose Scripted Television division is headed by Sabistina, recently inked a multi-year overall deal with AGC Television, the small-screen division of Stuart Ford’s indie content company AGC Studios.
