Last week’s Casualty dealt with the sad death of beloved nurse Duffy (Cathy Shipton). This week is equally heartbreaking, as a grieving Charlie (Derek Thompson) faces the future without his wife and the rest of the team try to help him come to terms with her loss – while struggling with their own emotions.
It’s the day of Duffy’s funeral, and Charlie has the guilty feeling that perhaps he could have done more for his wife. While David (Jason Durr) attempts to look after him, Charlie is upset and angry.
He knows there’s one last thing he can do for his wife, which is to pick out one of her old uniforms to lay on the coffin, but he feels that something’s missing. Will he work out what it is? And will he be able to give Duffy the send-off she deserves? As colleagues and friends assemble before the service, Charlie doesn’t think he can cope – and he turns his back on everything and walks away from the house.
Charlie isn’t the only one who’s struggling, and Connie (Amanda Mealing) is finding it hard to get through the day. The feelings of guilt she has about how she used Duffy to cover for her own mistakes are haunting her and she can’t bring herself to go to the funeral service. As she tries to immerse herself in work, Archie (Genesis Lynea) is the one who spots how Connie is really feeling. There’s been bad blood between the two of them for a long time, so will this help to bring them closer?
Both main patient storylines deal with situations where things are not as they seem. Archie tackles a case of suspected domestic abuse, but needs Connie’s help to work out what’s really going on. And Rash (Neet Mohan) has to employ all of his medical and diplomatic skills when a man is brought into the ED after collapsing – and he’s hiding a huge secret.
