Caroline Flack ‘really angry’ at Love Island criticism after Mike Thalassitis death

With Love Island 2019 just days away, some viewers are excited to see the confirmed line-up on screens, while others are worried for what’s to come.

Earlier this year, former islander Mike Thalassitis was found dead and Love Island was blamed by many fans.

Now, speaking in the July issue of Cosmopolitan, on sale from May 31, host Caroline Flack has condemned the criticism, labelling it as “dangerous”.

The bombshell said: “It’s dangerous and I’m really, really angry.

“I don’t think it’s fair to point fingers of blame”

“It’s not just that you’re blaming a TV show, you’re blaming people and their jobs.

“In life we all have a duty of care to look out for each other, but I don’t think it’s fair to point fingers of blame.”

She went on: “This is a much bigger issue than just a reality TV show, and when something this bad happens – and I’m talking about Mike – when something this horrible and sad occurs, it’s so dangerous to point fingers within hours and minutes of it happening.

“None of us know what’s going through someone’s mind and we can’t sit there and speculate.”

Making her viewpoint clear, Caroline added: “It’s time to think about the bigger picture, about what’s going on with young men and young people and the pressures of modern life.

“It’s just too sad and too sensitive to talk about. He was always a total gentlemen to me and I’m going to be a total lady back.”

Following the criticism Love Island faced, bosses put in place some new guidelines for the cast which cover things such as aftercare.

As well as psychological support throughout pre-filming and filming the series, ITV will have “proactive contact” with islanders for 14 months, up until the end of the next series.

There will be enhanced psychological support, detailed conversations with cast members about the impact of taking part, training on social media and financial management and the proactive aftercare.

Last year, the show went through similar backlash when Sophie Gradon took her own life two years after appearing on Love Island.

Love Island kicks off Monday, June 3 on ITV2.
