Bodyguard creator drops massive hint there could be a big death in series finale

Jed Mercurio as dropped a major hint that Julia Montague may not be the only big character to die in the series finale of Bodyguard.

Quizzed by intense fans Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, Jed let slip there may be another major death to the show’s most important character: David Budd himself.

Richard Madden’s character has been trying desperately to hunt down Julia’s killer, with a major cliffhanger leaving viewers on tenterhooks as he tracked down the tablet which may contain all the incriminating information about who is behind her death.

But Jed suggested the bodyguard may be another who ends up six feet under if things go south in his investigation.

Jed told the This Morning presenters: "Richard has done a fantastic job on this and we’re all so proud of what he’s achieved and so proud of him… it’s great he’s getting the attention he deserves and if that character survives we’ll have to get into a conversation about whether he would want to do another series."

At this word, "if," Phil was livid, and accused the creator of throwing in "red herrings left, right and centre."

But Jed remained tight-lipped as much as possible from that point, saying they have a special way to avoid being seen by potential spoiler-sharers.

He said: "That’s all part of what we do. We try and film in places where we don’t expose ourselves to people being able to pick up spoilers and we really rely on the cooperation of the media not to release info ahead of time."

When asked what fans were to expect in the longer finale on Sunday, he replied: "Well I think you need to watch the finale on Sunday night.

"We’re all sitting back and enjoying the speculation, it’s great people have their own theories and actually I do look at some of the bigger theories, and it’s interesting as occasionally there’s a grain of truth, but we’re not going to stand by and say, ‘hotter, colder’ as people put forward their theories.

"I can tell you that the episode returns to some of the very tense action style sequences of the first two, so there’s lots of action in the last episode and lots of answers to questions that have been in people’s minds these last few weeks.

"So I’m really very optimistic that people will get a lot out of the episode and will get the answers they’re looking for."

Phil asked Jed whether he was telling the truth when he said Julia was "definitely dead," in response to fan theories about the explosion which supposedly killed her.

He cryptically replied: "That’s the thing, if you’re a drama writer, you always have to tell the truth, there’s no element of fiction at all, Phillip.

"I think that’s also part of the history [Keeley’s character being killed in Line of Duty] that fact it happened before makes people swing before that she must obviously be dead, but there are other things in the drama which make the observant people swing towards that possibly being a ruse.

"We’re just sitting back and enjoying the response and speculation."

He said the conversation has not yet started about a potential second series, but there is definitely no alternative ending to the first series, meaning there may be no chance at it returning.

Bodyguard airs on Sunday night at 9pm on BBC1, and This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV.
