Better Call Saul's Bob Odenkirk hints at how that big death will transform Jimmy into Saul Goodman

Warning: Spoilers for Better Call Saul

As we all know, the third season of Better Call Saul saw the feud between Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) and his brother Chuck (Michael McKean) reach its end when Chuck kicked over one of his lanterns in his home, leading to a fire that killed him.

With season four premiering last night (August 6) in the US and in the UK today, we finally get to see the ramifications of that scene, and how it is going to push Jimmy that much closer to becoming his Breaking Bad character Saul Goodman.

Speaking about Jimmy’s denial over Chuck’s death, actor Bob Odenkirk told Entertainment Weekly: “I think a massive compartmentalisation goes on in his heart and in his mind. One that started the night before, when Chuck said that [Jimmy never mattered] to him.

“By the compartmentalisation that Jimmy does – like, ‘I’m not going to think about Chuck! He doesn’t get another second of my consciousness!’ – guess what pops up all around him in everyone’s face? Chuck.

“Now there’s 10,000 Chucks filling the world. Everywhere he looks and every person who says something that could be construed as critical is Chuck, staring at him.”

He continued: “Being Saul. I’ve always seen it as a choice that he makes. It’s a bad choice. It’s one of those things where you say people very often learn the wrong lessons and they over-correct from something.

“In the case of Jimmy, he’s told by his extremely emotionally handicapped brother that he was no good, that he destroyed everything he touched… he goes, ‘Fine, f**k it. You’re all telling me I’m a sleazeball piece of shit? I’m gonna do that every day. I’m gonna wake up every day dedicated to filling those shoes. With no qualms, no second thoughts. And that’s gonna be my big f**k you to you.'”

Better Call Saul airs on AMC in the US and Netflix in the UK.
