One of the most surprising moments in Avengers: Infinity War was the return of the Red Skull.
After being blasted into the beyond by the Tesseract way back in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, he showed up out of the blue on Vormir to tell Thanos the horrible way to acquire the Soul Stone – something Johann Schmidt was incapable of doing, since he had nothing that he loved to sacrifice.
And that might not be the last time we see Steve Rogers’ nemesis, as directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealed that the Red Skull is now free to roam again during a Twitter Q&A.
“Red Skull is free to leave Vormir, and he is also free to pursue his desire for an Infinity Stone,” they wrote.
The erstwhile ‘Stonekeeper’s obsession with the Infinity Stones dates all the way back to the Second World War, when he laid his hands on the Tesseract – aka the Space Stone.
While we don’t imagine he’d have the power be able to wrest them away from Thanos, maybe he’ll show up in Avengers 4 to give it a go.
And even if he doesn’t, he’s out there somewhere, and you can’t keep a good Nazi throwback down for long in the MCU.
The Red Skull was portrayed by The Walking Dead‘s Ross Marquand in Infinity War, replacing the original actor Hugo Weaving.
