We’ve known since Guardians of the Galaxy that Drax the Destroyer’s family was killed by Ronan the Accuser, who was acting on orders from Thanos.
But in the Blu-ray commentary for Avengers Infinity War co-director Joe Russo has expanded more on the character’s tragic backstory.
When we first meet Drax in Guardians he was on a revenge mission against Ronan, who he said, “murdered my wife, Hovat, and my daughter, Kamaria. He slaughtered them where they stood. And he laughed!”
But later in the film he learned that Thanos was really behind the death of his family and it was him he’d have to kill for revenge.
Drax would see his chance for revenge in Infinity War when he sneaks up on Thanos and The Collector in Knowhere.
And it turns out the scene had a deeper meaning than fans may have first realised, according to director Joe Russo:
“This is a callback to Drax’s history with Thanos here,” Russo explained in the commentary.
“His planet was treated the same way as Gamora’s planet. Drax was put on one side, his family was put on the other.”
The Infinity War commentary has thrown up plenty of interesting insights and also answered some questions fans may have been wrestling with – such as why Hulk refused to fight in the final battle.
Avengers: Infinity War is available to pre-order on Blu-ray, DVD or digital download ahead of its release on September 3.
