One of the biggest surprises in Avengers Endgame was Thor’s transformation from the muscular Asgardian god to a chunkier take on the character. The introduction of “Fat Thor” has proven controversial, with some fans accusing Marvel of fat-shaming and others finding the new comic turn of the character hilarious. Now Iron Man star Downey Jr has weighed in on the conversation, praising Hemsworth’s “Fat Thor” and Big Lebowski tribute. Speaking with Variety, he said: “Boy, did he go bonkers. He went out to the bleeding edge.”
Downey Jr added: “I have a rule, which is if you think you’re at 70%, then start pulling back, because it’s probably at 105.
“He went out into some pretty risky atmosphere of nuttiness.”
In the same article, Hemsworth revealed he had to push for his superhero to remain “Fat Thor” the whole movie rather than go through a montage to return to his Herculean physique.
He said: “I like that anything goes. You’re not locked into expectations.”
Hemsworth continued: “I enjoyed that version of Thor. It was so different than any other way I played the character.
“And then it took on a life of its own.”
Talking about the filming process, he said: “People just kept coming up and cuddling me like a big bear or rubbing my belly like I was pregnant. Or trying to sit on my lap like I was Santa Claus.
“You get a lot of affection. I felt like an old man, an old grandpa, with a bunch of kids around.”
The star added: “And then you get sick of it when people come up and grab your belly. ‘Don’t grab me like that!’
“I know how my wife [Elsa Pataky] felt when strangers would come up and rub her belly.”
But the question is, will “Fat Thor” stick around for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, or will he return to the Asgardian’s original body type?
Avengers Endgame is out now.
