Ant McPartlin's ex Lisa Armstrong offers support to Bake Off's Candice Brown after she's targeted by trolls

The baking star, 34, had appeared on The Great Festive Bake Off alongside 2017 finalist Steven Carter-Bailey, 2015's runner-up Tamal Ray, 32, and 2014 contestant Kate Henry, 41.

Following the show, she found herself subjected to a slew of criticism, including threats of violence, on Twitter after her lipstick cake failed to wow the judges.

In response to one rather foul comment, Candice, who revealed she struggles with "low self-esteem", retweeted the post and wrote: "Round of applause for this young man…… most original insult EVER".

Showing her support, Lisa, who has endured a difficult year with the breakdown of her marriage to Ant McPartlin, tweeted the TV star an empowering message in the wake of the aggressive criticism.

The Strictly make-up artist, 42, encouragingly wrote: "Ignore the idiots babe, you are beautiful inside and out!!! #yougogirl."

Grateful for her support, Candice responded: "You too lovely lady xx".

On Tuesday, viewers saw Stephen Carter-Bailey win the New Year edition of The Great British Bake Off.

The school teacher beat former champion Candice after she failed to impress with her lipstick cake, which left viewers at home commenting in their droves about the phallic shaped treat.

One wrote: "Candice's lipstick cake on #GBBO looks like a dog's d**."

Another added: "Has candice made a lipstick k***?" while a third tweeted: "Over-sized lipstick". That is totally gonna look like a d*** #gbbo."

Even host Sandi Toksvig noticed, saying: "I'm not a big fan of innuendo but… what is that?"

With a chuckle Candice replied: "I don't know what you're talking about? It's lipstick."

Despite the hilarity of her cake, Candice's appearance prompted a very negative vocal response from fans across Twitter.

Candice decided to hit back at one particular user, who suggested that she has "f****d up" her baking, in a tongue and cheek manner.

Replying to her critic: "Really?? I'd re think that resolution if I were you because that's not very nice! "And actually I didn't f*** up- I meant to make a rubbish pair of lips, a cake that looked like a dogs winky, a stodgy stollen and pout til my face hurt! Happy new year #bekind."

As she read through the criticism posted about her appearance online, she responded to another nasty user.

She began: "OMG. IT WAS MEANT TO BE A BIT OF FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Happy new year to you- from this arrogant self obsessed person who now wishes she hadn't bothered."
