We’re nearing the end of an era. The man, the myth, the legend, Alex Trebek, is considering retiring as host of Jeopardy, and this time around, he’s serious. During a recent appearance on Harvey Levin’s OBJECTified, Trebek said the odds of him vacating his post are 50/50 “and a little less” when his contract is up in 2020. The personality has been at the helm of the game show since 1984, which means he’s starred on it for more than three decades. You can’t blame him for wanting to chill a little bit.
Trebek has suggestions on who should inherit the Jeopardy throne, and by throne, we mean podium. At the top of his list is Alex Faust (Alex, too? We see what you did there, Trebek), “the fellow that does play-by-play for the Los Angeles Kings.” Then, there’s Laura Coates, a CNN legal analyst. “There is an attorney, Laura Coates,” Trebek said. “She’s African-American and she appears on some of the cable news shows from time to time.” A Black woman hosting one of the most popular syndicated game shows in the world? We’re so here for it!
But we have our own dream hosts in mind. In true Trebek fashion, let’s meet the contestants!
1. Anderson Cooper
Cooper’s got the looks, the brains, the charisma, and unparalleled talent. Not to mention he’s been a Celebrity Jeopardy champ not once, not twice, but THREE times. He’s no stranger to manning a reality show and a daytime show. Cooper hosted The Mole in the early 2000s and Anderson Live, which unfortunately only ran for two seasons.
2. Ken Jennings
This is a no-brainer. A Jeopardy veteran — and a record-breaker at that — Jennings has won 74 times, and earned a grand total of $2.5 million between June 2 and November 30, 2004. He could win the game in his sleep. He knows Jeopardy inside and out, which makes him a very worthy replacement.
3. Rachel Maddow
While Maddow hasn’t been a contestant on the show, she once got her own category, and that counts for something. Her hosting prowess and eloquence would translate well in this position, and she’d surely shade the contestants in the best of ways.
4. Will Ferrell
Ferrell’s impression of Trebek on Saturday Night Live was so iconic that even Trebek couldn’t help but express admiration. We wouldn’t mind seeing him take on the role and work his comedic magic. #Ferrell2020
5. Laura Coates
Coates is one of Trebek’s personal favorites, but we’re also listing her as a top contender. A woman of many talents, Coates is not only a CNN legal analyst, she’s also a best-selling author, law professor, skillful commentator, radio host, and a former civil rights lawyer. She’s woke as hell, and employing her as the new Jeopardy host would certainly be refreshing.
