Which? has looked at airport facilities, customer service, toilets and queues to check in and found that Luton performed the worst in the UK.
The airport also scored badly on its seating and the queues for bag drop and had a customer satisfaction score of only 35 per cent.
The survey was based on the scores of 11,265 passengers visiting UK airports.
Heathrow's Terminal 5 came in first place in the UK for large airports and scored especially highly on all factors, including its staff, baggage reclaim, seating and toilets.
The second best rated large airport was Birmingham, followed by Heathrow's Terminal 2.
Edinburgh came in fourth place, and Gatwick's North Terminal in fifth place.
The research also looked at the UK's smaller airports, with Doncaster-Sheffield coming in first place with a customer satisfaction score of 87 per cent.
It was followed by Southend, which had a customer satisfaction score of 84 per cent, with both scoring highly on queues at security, prices at its outlets and staff.
Newcastle came in third place, followed by Southampton in fourth place and Exeter in fifth place.
The airport that scored lowest out of the small airports was Aberdeen, with a score of only 49 per cent.
Rory Boland, Which? Travel editor said:
“Travellers want to start their trips in the smoothest way, but long queues through airports and a lack of facilities can cast a rain cloud over any getaway."
He continued: “With new routes launching all the time, passengers have an increasing choice over not just who they fly with but where they fly from.
“If you can pick a smaller airport, choose Southend over Luton, and Doncaster Sheffield or Liverpool instead of Manchester to get your holiday off to a better start.”
