Here's how to land the best room in the hotel next time you go on holiday

There are ways to get the most for the money you have paid – but travellers will have to make a little more effort than turning up on the day and hoping for the best.

The best way to get what you want, whether that’s a quiet room, or a room with a view, is to simply ask.

USA Today reports that the way to do this is to call up the front desk before you get there to put in a request.

Cheri Young, associate professor at the University of Denver’s school of hospitality management said: "The front desk agents are the ones who choose a room for you when you check in, choosing from the available inventory.

“If you call beforehand, you can talk to a front desk clerk and ask about the best rooms, like corner rooms, a room on a higher floor, away from the elevators and ice machines."

As hotel rooms are often assigned on arrival and check in, calling ahead to make a request means that you are more likely to get it.

It’s also worth thinking about the age of the hotel before booking.

While it's easy to be drawn to grander, older hotels, there’s often a sacrifice to be made when it comes to the quality of a bed.

Daniella Flores, a personal finance blogger for Iliketodabble.com said: "The less comfortable and older the beds will be."

Hotel expert Jacob Tomsky, author of hotel memoir Heads In Beds: A Reckless Memoir of Hotels, Hustles and So-Called Hospitality, worked in the hotel business for 10 years.

In an interview with Sun Online Travel he told us exactly how you can get an upgrade for minimal cash.

Jacob says tipping front desk was always a winner in the hotels he worked at, which is something that we don’t do often in the UK.

He says that front desk staff have power when it comes to your stay at the hotel.

He told us: “You may not realise it, but the person on front desk has a whole host of powers when it comes to deciding what room you’re in.

“The main thing that people need to do is slow down their check in and treat the front desk agent like a human being who is making some very important decisions that will affect their stay."
