Flying on a Saturday could cost you over £200 more when booking a holiday

It's no secret that flight prices can be higher if you opt to travel during the weekend – but flying on a Saturday could make the biggest dent in your budget.

That's because a study has found that swapping a Saturday flight in favour of a Friday or Sunday could save you hundreds of pounds on winter sun holidays.

Holiday Hypermarket compared the costs of flying on Saturday versus Friday and Sunday, based on two people travelling on an all-inclusive holiday at a four-star hotel.

(It's also worth noting that the company only looked at flights with a London departure during the winter months).

The research found that a Tenerife getaway in January could cost you on average £136pp more when flying on a Saturday compared to Sunday, while this rose to £148pp in February.

It was the same for those heading to Cyprus, with prices tending to be £167pp cheaper with a Sunday departure compared to a Saturday.

There was one exception; Barbados flights worked out cheapest on Saturdays, by an average of £297pp for 14-night getaways.

The study was based for travel in January, February and March but if you're thinking of jet setting off on a last-minute break over the festive period, you may want to check out our guide with top tips on the best time to book Christmas flights .

Ian Crawford of Holiday Hypermarket says: "We analysed holiday prices from all of the leading operators and it's clear to see that if you can move your travel plans by just a few hours, couples and families can save hundreds of pounds on their holiday.

"The choice of hotels will usually change between departure days but travellers can still choose accommodation at the same grade, so they need to be flexible about where they stay to get the benefit of this hack.

"For many destinations, it’s clear that if you swap your Saturday flight you can save enough money for a room upgrade, posh meal or fancy excursion instead."
