Ferris wheels and malls – how Dubai aims to be world's top holiday spot by 2025

The city is planning to draw in 25million visitors a year by that date – fending off competition from the likes of London, Bangkok and Paris.

Sun Online Travel previously reported that London is the second-most visited tourist destination in the world – coming only after Bangkok.

While Bangkok sees 20.05million visitors per year, London is very close behind with 19.8million tourists paying a visit per year.

Dubai is currently in fourth place, raking in 15.8million visitors per year according to Mastercard’s Global Destination Cities Index, but plans to smash this by becoming the biggest tourist destination in the world.

Dubai hit a record this August when over 8.3million people flew into its airport.

The National reports that the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed has announced a new strategy for the city to rake in huge numbers by 2025.

He tweeted: “Dubai will be the most-visited city in the world by adopting a set of ambitions, development plans and valuable projects that will form a strong foundation to establish Dubai’s leadership.”

The programme aims to attract visitors via ecotourism.

New attractions such as the Dubai Frame, the Museum of the Future and the Eye of Dubai Ferris wheel will help to pull visitors in.

Meanwhile the new Gevora Hotel is the tallest in the world with 75 floors – and has the highest-up rooftop pool, 365m in the air.

Money is also being pumped into new attractions such as a new £1.5billion mega-shopping mall that will be the size of 100 football pitches.

The mall will have 2.6million square metres of shops, restaurants, hotels and places to live and will have three floors to explore.

Dubai Square will be in big competition with the existing Dubai Mall, which is a comparatively puny 50 footballs pitches in size.

Sun Online Travel previously revealed that Dubai is planning two artificial islands worth £1.3billion to attract families and rich tourists.
