Airline cancels UK flights to top European city permanently | The Sun

A BUDGET airline has removed flights from the UK to a popular holiday hotspot from its schedule, without confirming exactly why.

Until very recently Wizz Air offered flights from the UK to Italian city, Verona, taking off from London Gatwick.

However, those flights are no longer available, with the airline telling Sun Online Travel it is down to "operational reasons".

As of last month the route no longer appears on the Wizz Air website, with British Airways and easyJet now the only two carriers connecting the airports.

The airline still offers some flights to the Italian city, with their website inviting passengers to "bring out your inner Romeo or Juliet during your city break".

However, those flights are from Gdansk, Warsaw, Catania, Tirana and Poznan, but not from the UK.

The cancellation comes less than a year after the route was launched, with Wizz adding it to their schedule along with flights from Luton to Lodz, Luton to Bydgoszcz and Gatwick to Grenoble in December 2022.

At the time, Marion Geoffroy, Managing Director of Wizz Air UK, said: "We are thrilled to announce the addition of four new routes from our bases at London Luton Airport and Gatwick Airport, which give our passengers an even greater variety of exciting city break and holiday options for Winter and beyond.

"We constantly strive to expand our route network and invest in the UK market, creating more low-fare connections whilst stimulating the local economies around our airport bases.

"We look forward to welcoming customers onboard our young, efficient, and sustainable aircraft as they travel over this festive period and into the New Year."

Now, less than a year later, the Gatwick to Verona flights are no longer available to book.

A spokesperson told Sun Online travel: "The route has been removed due to operational reasons."

It's not the only route from the four that were launched last year to not be available on the Wizz website, with flights to Lodz currently not on offer.

It is unclear if this is due to the same reason, although Sun Online Travel has asked for clarification.

The airline has however launched some new routes this winter, with filghts to Egypt and Czechia.

The airline started taking people to Prague and Hurghada from Gatwick, as well as to Cairo from Luton, at the end of October.

Elsewhere, 11 new flight routes have been launched from Heathrow, including to places like Lima in Peru and The Maldives.

They also have new routes to Turks & Caicos, Riga, Belgrade, Cologne, Turin, Salzburg, Friedrichshafen, Dubai and Ashgabat.
