The modern world is no place for nostalgia because just as we learn to love something it’s cruelly replaced by an ‘upgraded’ version.
And now the faithful folk of YouTube are about to be reminded of the relentless forward march of ‘progress’ when a much-loved version of the website’s interface is killed off.
In 2017, YouTube introduced a new ‘look’ for desktop which introduced various new design upgrades including dark mode.
It used to be possible to opt-out of the upgrade and continue using the old interface.
But in March, you’ll be forced to use the new version of YouTube as you watch videos at work (not that we recommend this) or on your home computer.
Google wrote: ‘Back in August 2017 we launched a new look for YouTube on desktop that introduced material design and new features like dark theme. Until now, people still had the option to opt-out of the new experience and continue using the older version of YouTube on desktop.
‘Enter 2020 and the older versions are missing many of the new features and design improvements we’ve introduced over the past 3 years, including top requests based on your feedback (see most recent update here). That’s why the older version will be going away in March and you’ll only be able to access newer desktop versions to enjoy the best of YouTube.
‘If you’re using an older version, you will see a notification telling you to ‘Switch to the new YouTube’. You may also need to update your browser if it’s not compatible with the new version. We’ll let you know in the notification message if this is the case.’
The ‘new YouTube’ was unveiled in 2017 but was optional.
At the time, Neal Mohan, chief product officer, wrote: ‘ Our new look applies Material Design to YouTube and delivers a fresh, simple and intuitive user experience that lets content shine – because there’s nothing more important than the creators and videos we all love to watch.
‘My favourite feature of this new desktop design is Dark Theme, which turns the background dark while you watch for a more cinematic look.’
