You’re charging your phone wrong but there’s a way to improve its battery life

Millions of people are charging their phone wrong—and it could be the reason why nobody's battery seems to last anymore.

Plugging your phone in to charge when you go to bed seems like the most obvious way of getting your battery to full power for the next day.

After all, it's a period of 'dead' time in the day when you almost certainly won't be using the device.

However, if you've noticed that your phone battery doesn't last as long as it used to, that could be because your bedtime charging has done more harm than good.

Your phone's battery life naturally decreases over time, but it can get even worse if you regularly let it charge up to 100%—or completely run out and hit 0%.

This is because long idle charges can mean your phone gets hit with high voltages and temperatures, causing stress to the battery over time and ultimately reducing its capacity.

It's also a good idea to fully switch off your device when you're not using it, and to charge it before your Battery Saver or Lower Power mode warning appears.

Instead of giving your phone one massive charge every day, you should try these steps:

  • Charge your phone in regular, small increments to keep it topped up throughout the day
  • Try to stop charging your phone once it hits 80-90%, as maxing out the battery capacity harms the battery life
  • Fast charging cables are really helpful but should only be used when necessary – leaving your phone plugged into one for hours can cause problems
  • Avoid playing games or watching movies while charging your phone as this can cause further damage to the battery

This applies to both iPhone and Android devices, so just make sure you're taking steps to ensure your gadget keeps working as well as possible in the long-term.
