Windows finally accepts we won't 'safely remove' our USB sticks

Anyone who’s ever yanked a USB stick out of a laptop will be familiar with Windows’ pop-up message admonishing them for not ‘safely removing’ it first.

The danger is real – it can lead to data corruption on the thumb drive that’ll put a severe dent in your dissertation efforts or the report you were supposed to have in front of your boss by the end of the week.

Nevertheless, we all have busy lives and can’t always spare ten or twenty seconds for the computer to think about what it’s doing and safely eject the USB.

Microsoft, it seems, has finally woken up to that fact and is changing the way Windows deals with USB input and output.

You can always switch it back to the old way by right clicking on the drive and selecting ‘properties’ then selecting the ‘removal policy’ option and swap it back from ‘quick removal’ to ‘better performance’.

Just remember to keep ejecting it properly.
