The latest version of Microsoft's ubiquitous operating system is set to roll out as a free upgrade to all Windows 10 PCs next month, the company announced in a blog post this week.
Windows users can expect to receive a notification offering them a free upgrade from October 5 onwards. However, this will be rolled out in phases, so don't be disappointed if you don't get yours straight away. New devices will be the first to receive the upgrade followed by older PCs.
If you miss the notification, you'll also be able to check whether you're due an upgrade by going to Settings > Windows Update and hitting 'Check for Updates'.

Windows 11 has been billed as a more incremental update to the world's most popular PC operating system. It offers a familiar yet improved look and feel, and adds some new features such as AI-powered Widgets feeds and integrated Microsoft Teams chat functions.

Excitingly for gamers, Windows 11 unlocks the latest DirectX12 Ultimate graphics technology, which adds next-gen graphics capability to new and old games.
This will allow you to make the most of the Xbox Game Pass, which gives you more than 100 PC games for a set monthly fee. Microsoft is billing the operating system as the "best Windows ever for gaming".
One big development is that Microsoft is planning to bring Android apps to Windows 11, which means your computer will have greater sync capabilities with your Android smartphone or tablet. However, this won't be available on October 5th – instead, most of us will have to wait until 2022.
Windows 11 is being released six years after the initial launch of Windows 10 – the longest gap between versions in the operating system's history.
