It’s been rumoured for a while but it appears WhatsApp is finally ready to roll out a vital feature aimed at helping users free up storage on their devices. Running low on space is something almost all of us have suffered at some point and this new upgrade from the chat service will make it much easier to delete content stored within the app.
WhatsApp says it has completely redesigned the storage management tool to make it more useful for people to easily identify, review and bulk delete content that may be filling their phones.
There’s easy cleanup suggestions which bucket both large files and media that has been forwarded many times plus you can now sort files by size in descending order.
WhatsApp has even included a way to preview files before deleting them so you shouldn’t remove anything by mistake. You can also see a preview of media before selecting one or multiple items to delete.
WhatsApp has confirmed that the new storage management tools are rolling out to users worldwide this week although there’s no exact date revealing when everyone will have access to the upgrade.
When available, users can navigate to the new tool by going to Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage.
Along with announcing this update, WhatsApp also revealed some major news about its user numbers.
During a recent earnings call, Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg revealed that WhatsApp users are now sending a whopping 100 billion messages every day.
It’s an impressive stat and shows huge growth for the service. Back in 2014 around 50 billion messages were being sent via WhatsApp meaning things have doubled in just six years.
Confirming the news, Will Cathcart, Head of WhatsApp posted a message on Twitter saying: “This year we’ve all relied on messaging more than ever to keep up with our loved ones and get business done.
“We are proud that @WhatsApp is able to deliver roughly 100B messages every day and we’re excited about the road ahead.”
