WhatsApp down as thousands of users report app not working

Users around the world are reporting issues with the popular messaging service WhatsApp.

Thousands of users around the globe have reported problems with sending and receiving messages on Sunday morning.

Normal text messages and links have not been an issue, but voice notes in particular are suffering.

The website Down Detector has shown a widespread issue in terms of outage.

The worst hit areas is Europe, with regions in Asia and South America also facing severe issues.

Several social media users have posted about the impact to their service with the hashtag #whatsappdown now trending.

One user tweeted: "Is it just me or WhatsApp is Temporarily down, cause my photos, GIFs, and voice note fail to deliver. Any other person with this issue?"

Another person tweeted: "Whatsapp Media Sharing is down from past 45 minutes Oh my god! Unable to send any photos or videos. Are you facing it too? If yes which country are you from? #whatsappdown".

It is the latest series of outages from the Facebook-owned messaging platform following a major incident in March last year which left users cut off for nearly an entire day.

So far it is not apparent if the problem is impacting Facebook messaging services.

There are issues across the UK, parts of the UAE, the Netherlands, as well as Spain and Italy.
