The COVID-19 pandemic is leading to an outbreak of cybercrime as well.
United Nations disarmament chief, Izumi Nakamitsu, told a meeting of the UN Security Council that cybercrime had exploded in recent months with a 600% rise in malicious emails alone.
“There have also been worrying reports of [cyber] attacks against health care organizations and medical research facilities worldwide,” Nakamitsu told the body.
The UN meeting was organized by Estonia’s Prime Minister Juri Ratas, who also condemned cyberattacks against hospitals, medical facilities and urgent care workers.
“Those attacks are unacceptable,” Ratas said. “It will be important to hold the offenders responsible for their behavior.”
Russia, a longtime hub for hackers and cybercriminals, did not attend the meeting.
