Twitter users attempting to log on to the app or site on Thursday afternoon were greeted by a message that reads “something is technically wrong.”
According to the company’s status page, the disruption was caused by an “internal configuration change.”
“Some people may be able to access Twitter again and we’re working to make sure Twitter is available to everyone as quickly as possible.”
Outage tracking website Downdetector.com showed that there were nearly 50,000 incidents of people across the globe reporting issues with Twitter.
The service disruption appears to have affected users worldwide.
Earlier Thursday, Twitter added a new feature for Canadian users, allowing them to hide responses to their tweets.
The idea is being tested in Canada first, before it is adopted by other countries.
Earlier in the day, another popular site, Reddit, was also experiencing issues on its website. Those appear to have been resolved.
