Sony Xperia is the Japanese tech giant’s smartphone range that comes in budget, mid-tier and premium forms.
The Sony Xperia 1 is the firm’s best smartphone right now – it totes a gorgeous display with a unique aspect ratio, an intuitive Android experience and sports a quality design.
In the build up to the Xperia 1’s launch, the Japanese vendor notably promoted the camera of the hardware as one of its best features.
Xperia 1 comes with a triple lens system comprised of a 12-megapixel primary, 12-megapixel telephoto and a 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle shooter.
The trio certainly allow for a diverse photography experience.
Sony’s Xperia 1 launched at the price of £849, meaning the smartphone directly competed with handsets such as the Huawei P30 Pro, Galaxy S10 and the iPhone XR.
And it seems the Japanese mobile is unable to compete with any of those listed above where photography is concerned, according to a review of the device from DxOMark.
DxOMark is a publication renowned for meticulously testing smartphone cameras and assigning them a numbered score based on performance.
The outlet recently issued its verdict on the Xperia 1’s front and rear camera systems – both were given middling figures.
DxOMark awarded the Xperia 1 a rear camera score of 91 – a total that puts it behind Apple’s 2017 iPhone 8, the OnePlus 6, the Google Pixel 2 and a deluge of more contemporary flagships such as the Galaxy S10, OnePlus 7 Pro and the Huawei P30 Pro.
In its conclusion, the publication said Sony’s camera software needed to be tuned to a higher degree to compete with its high-end rivals.
DxOMark said: “The Sony Xperia 1’s image quality performance is surprisingly on par only with older or less expensive smartphones, demonstrating that camera software must be also be carefully tuned in order to optimise hardware performance and successfully compete in the high-end smartphone market.”
In terms of its front camera, the Xperia 1 was handed a score of 71, figure that puts it behind devices such as the iPhone Xs, Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 and even last year’s Galaxy S9 and Note 9.
While Sony’s selfie snapper was praised for having great autofocus and producing sharp photos, it was ultimately faulted for putting green and blue colour casts over many images.
DxOMark went on: “Sony has done a great job with the focus system for the Xperia 1 selfie camera. It delivers nice sharp images in a wide range of situations and gets all the faces in a group in focus.
“This would make it a good choice for travel and vacations when you may wish to shoot selfies in front of key destinations. The video stabilisation system also does a decent job, taking much of the shake and wobble out of handheld footage.
“However, a green or blue colour casts mars many images by giving skins an unhealthy hue. There’s also quite marked fringing in some images, but if you can live with these shortcomings, the Xperia 1 is worth considering.”
The review and final scores for the Xperia 1’s front and rear cameras will surely come as a disappointing blow to many Sony fans.
