When it comes to wearable cameras, Snap is hoping that the third time is the charm.
The parent company of disappearing-photo app Snapchat on Tuesday unveiled the latest iteration of its Spectacles smart glasses — which will now let users record photos and video in 3D.
The frames will let users apply augmented reality filters onto the pictures and videos they take, making it look like the effects exist in real life. One effect, for example, makes it appear that the wearer of the glasses is walking underwater. Another filter encases the environment in glitter. The glasses can also take 3D photos, which will come with a tilting effect when viewed to make them visible from different angles.
Like Apple’s popular AirPods, the Spectacles 3 will feature a high-tech carrying case that can recharge the glasses’ batteries while they are stored, and stores up to four full charges.
The stainless steel Spectacles 3 will retail for $380 and feature a futuristic design that comes in black and rose gold.
The new Spectacles are a gamble for Snap, which in 2017 lost close to $40 million on unsold units of its disastrous first-generation smart glasses.
Snap has not reported losses on its second-generation Spectacles, but the glasses have also not been very popular with consumers.
The Spectacles 3 are available for pre-order now and will launch in the fall.
Shares of Snap were up 1.2 percent Tuesday morning, at $17.00.
