Samsung and BT Sport show off future of TV during first live 8k broadcast

If you thought your new 4K TV was good, wait until you see what’s coming next.

Samsung and BT Sport have shown off the future of TV with the first live 8K broadcast which took place at the Emirates Stadium.

StarTech was lucky enough to witness this eye-popping event which offers fans the chance to watch the on-field action at four times the resolution of 4K.

That means what you’re watching on the big screen looks better than actually sitting in the stadium.

The groundbreaking test took place during Arsenal’s defeat to Olympiacos last Thursday with the pixel-packed content sent from the pitch straight to one of Samsung’s latest QLED TVs.

Making this happen was no mean feat as 8K requires some serious technology including new broadcast cameras which cost in excess of £400,000 and huge bandwidth to beam this memory-hungry content across the network.

There’s no word yet on when this service will land in UK living rooms but it may not be as far away as you think. BT Sport is hoping that customers will be able to tune in to 8K content from next year via its Ultimate Live service with some rumours even suggesting this year’s Champions League final will get an 8K makeover.

But, before you get too excited, there are a few things you’ll need to buy. Obviously an 8K TV is imperative but a good broadband signal will be important.

BT says that its footage will be beamed to these new TVs via the web and it’s likely that it will need speeds of around 80Mbps to make it worth watching.

Anything under that could end up with that annoying ball-stopping buffering.

Discussing the update Jamie Hindhaugh, chief operating officer, BT Sport said: “Today’s broadcast in partnership with Samsung continues BT’s mission to take our viewers to the heart of sport and serve them the ultimate viewing experience.”

Last week’s test was an historic moment for 8K and expect more news on this ultimate content in the coming months.
