Playstation gamers getting major free graphics upgrade this week in new update

Playstation gamers are in for a treat this week as Sony has begun to roll out a major new graphics enhancing update.

The free upgrade, which will bring the PS5 up to speed with the Xbox Series X, adds Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support to the elusive console.

What this means is that compatible TVs and monitors will be able to dynamically sync their refresh rates to the PS5's graphics output in real time.

In a blog post, Sony claims that "this enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artefacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing."

The Japanese tech giant added: "Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render seamlessly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced."

To ensure the new graphics upgrade works properly, Sony has released a list of PS5 titles set to receive VRR-friendly updates. These games include:

  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Deathloop
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • Godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

  • iPhone models that will no longer work or are obsolete as Apple issues official warning

You can also apply VRR to PS5 games which don't receive a patch. This should improve video quality for some games, but might not be compatible with all of them.

The update will be automatically rolled out to PS5 consoles this week. Once the update is installed, VRR will automatically be enabled for supported games if your console is connected to a HDMI 2.1 compatible display.

VRR is a technology that allows the refresh rate of TVs to change dynamically, rather than being pegged at 30 or 60fps. This means that the TV can sync with the graphics of the console, and avoid ugly 'tearing' glitches.

Until now, the PS5 struggled to reach its full graphics potential because it has to reduce the resolution of the game to maintain the fixed framerate of most TVs.
