Galaxy S9 owners have just been dealt a blow that could finally convince them it’s time to switch to something new. Samsung has just quietly updated its security page with the ageing S9 now being relegated to quarterly updates rather than the current monthly upgrades this phone has enjoyed since launch.
That basically means, from now on, owners will only get these vital patches once every three months. The S9 now joins other devices – such as the Galaxy S7 Active and Galaxy S8 – in getting quarterly security updates.
Although this should still keep your phone relatively safe and secure if you want to be treated to those more regular changes from Samsung you’ll need to get online and buy a new phone.
For those that do upgrade to a new device, there’s better news as Samsung recently announced it’s extending the security updates for its latest phones with all getting upgrades for at least four years.

Samsung says that by extending support for security updates delivered on a monthly, quarterly or biannual basis, it is giving users peace of mind knowing their data is protected for as long as they use their Galaxy device.
“At Samsung, our number one priority is offering the best and most secure mobile experience to our users, and we’re constantly optimizing the security of our products and services,” said Seungwon Shin, VP & Head of Security Team at Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics.
“Mobile devices play such an important role in our lives, it’s only natural that we want to hold onto them longer. That’s why, thanks to the latest technology advancements, we’re committing to securing Galaxy devices for even longer, so that everything that should be kept protected stays protected.”
