Official Footage of the Arecibo Telescope Collapse Has Been Released

The saddening news of the collapse of the Arecibo Telescope is still being felt by many astronomers around the globe. To give an insight as to how the whole 820-tonne receiver came crashing down, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has just released official footage of the disaster.

The video (complete with sound) gives two angles: one from the base of the support tower, and the other via a drone that just so happened to be focused on the critical anchor bolt that gave way from the increased tension. We can see that all three of the top sections from the support towers broke off, and at which angle the 305-meter telescope fell into the canopy below.

With the amount of destruction and violent force exerted, from the snapping of the cables and shearing of the columns, it’s just a miracle that no one was hurt. Watch the video above to witness the collapse of the Arecibo Telescope that happened in Puerto Rico just days ago.
