Next Nintendo Switch could be coming much sooner than expected

It’s been about 18 months since the Nintendo Switch launched to a lot of excitement and some decent reviews to back it up, so it’s no wonder that Nintendo is now reportedly planning to give the hardware a bit of an update.

According to a new report in The Wall Street Journal, the gaming company is planning on releasing a new version of its Switch console as early as next year, with the likely release date being tipped as between summer and the second half of 2019.

While there’s no solid details on what changes the Switch update will bring just yet, reports are highlighting an improved LCD screen as a likely feature.

The Switch proved a hit during its first weekend on sale, helped by the universal praise for Switch-exclusive game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but after a quieter year of sales in 2018, there’s no doubt Nintendo will be hoping to repeat its earlier success with an upgraded console.

At least there’ll be plenty of games to choose from, as last month it was announced that more than 50 classic Sega Mega Drive games will be available as a bundle for the Nintendo Switch before the end of the year.

The games – including Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2, as well as Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Kid Chameleon – are due to be released this winter in both digital and physical versions, and will have a number of features, from online multiplayer and split screen to achievements and mirror modes.

And for those more interested in a more modern phenomenon, there’s always Fortnite, which launched on the Switch earlier this year.
